Simon spends Christmas in Gavinana

For Christmas 2000 I decided to join Page & Moy again, and take my first look at Toscana.  Staying at the hill town of MONTEPULCIANO, excursions were made to historic places within Tuscany, but not exclusively so.

The history of the GAVINANA is tied to the leader of troops Francesco Ferrucci who, in 1530 led his soldiers against the Imperial army. The equestrian statue in the main piazza of the town and the nearby Museo Ferrucciano are dedicated to this heroic fighter. In the piazza you can also find the ancient parochial church of Santa Maria Assunta (XII century).

Gavinana stands, like so many towns in Tuscany, atop a large hill.  Although Gavinana is not massively high, the winding road with its many hairpin bends make it a long tortuous journey to get down off the hill to the main roads below.
