Simon sees Siena

For Christmas 2000 I decided to join Page & Moy again, and take my first look at Toscana.  Staying at the hill town of MONTEPULCIANO, excursions were made to historic places within Tuscany, but not exclusively so.

Then a visit to glorious SIENA famous for its central piazza The Campo, a shell shaped 'square' renown for its famous horse race "The Palio" held twice yearly. Also famous for its Black and White (actually Dark Green and White) Cathedral, its Town Hall, the old hospital and many other sites.

Christmas 2000 was rather dark and wet, so the photos were rather dull.  However, I returned to Tuscany for Christmas 2003, staying in GAVINANA, and once again had the chance to spend time in Siena.  For 2003 the sun shone, although the wind also blew and it was not much fun at the top of the tower Palazzo Publica.  These photos may be added to, as I have booked to return to Siena in September 2004.

Siena may be famous for the grand works of its Duomo, its Palazzo Publica, and the Piazza Campo, but it is also renown for the much smaller works of art too.
Notably early frescoes, including fabulous Duccios which I was privileged to see an exhibition of at Christmas 2003, and the massive frescoes in the Town Hall.
For more of these works, go to the ART album.
